* State Reference Service closes at 12.30pm on Saturdays during December and January.
The library is closed on public holidays.

The State Reference Service provides reference library services to the Tasmanian community and visitors. The service can be accessed online, by phone, or in person at the izone (2nd floor of the State Library building, 91 Murray Street, Hobart).

A small car park is located underneath the library for short-term visitors. There is also a public car park opposite the library in Bathurst Street, which can be accessed via Melville Street.

Library information

State Reference Service has access to a vast range of reference resources - over 200,000 books, many local and international newspapers, maps, magazines, journals, newsletters and databases. The collection holds many Tasmanian and Commonwealth government publications and family history resources.

  • Study and comfortable magazine browsing areas (izone).
  • Access to a range of local and international magazines and newspapers (izone and Microspace).
  • Free PCs and Internet access.
  • Photocopiers and printers (izone).
  • Access to items not available in our collection through the Document Delivery service.
  • Use our Stack Retrieval form to have items held in our separate Stack area ready waiting for you when you arrive at the izone. All we require is one hour's notice.
