50+ A partnership between older Tasmanians, libraries and online access centres 

50+ is the State Library’s action plan that describes commitments that the State Library has made to older clients and the actions being taken to meet those commitments.

Research reveals that by 2019 Tasmania will have the oldest population in Australia.  Currently, over 30% of the State Library’s clients are aged 50 years of age or older.

During the next few years, the growing population of older Tasmanians will require a range of high-quality and diverse services to cater for their information and access needs.


In response to the changing demographic, the State Library has made commitments in 10 areas of service delivery to achieve the aim of providing the best possible services for older people.

The commitments came out of state-wide consultation with community organisations and the staff of the Library and online access centre network who were surveyed about the interests and information-use among people aged 50 and over.

 

The commitments are to:

  • design services in consultation
  • provide services that respond to the interests of older clients
  • extend computer-based services
  • involve community organisations
  • provide training and support for older people to use electronic services
  • provide extension services
  • review buildings, furniture and equipment
  • encourage volunteering
  • provide community information
  • develop a marketing strategy
