People with special needs

Access

All city libraries and some branch libraries have designated parking for people with special needs, either in library car parks or close by. They also have automatic opening doors, toilets for the physically disabled, and lifts and ramps where required.

Aisle widths in some libraries, and the heights of tables on which our catalogue terminals and personal computers are placed, will accommodate wheelchair access. Some libraries also have baskets on wheels to assist people to carry items to be checked out.

Services

Services include:

Home Library Service: delivers library items to people who are unable to visit the library in person because of illness or disability.

Recorded Book Service: assists people with a print disability to access books on cassette and compact disc.

Equipment

Equipment includes:

• baskets on wheels to carry items.
• higher chairs.
• adjustable technology. Some city libraries have magnifiers such as Viewpoint or Merlin to enlarge text for easier reading. Other equipment may include large keyboards, touch screens, Zoomtext screen magnifier and alternative mouse devices.

Resources include:

• Large print books: a range of fiction and non-fiction titles for people who have difficulty reading regular print.
• Audio books and Recorded books
• Subtitled DVDs: award winning feature films with subtitles in various languages and subtitles for the hearing impaired.
• Adult literacy books and Adult literacy resource kits.
