The State Library of Tasmania encourages and welcomes children of all ages to use the resources and services available through its network of 48 libraries across the State.
Parents and carers are responsible for determining and delivering the level of supervision their child requires while in the library.
The well-being and safety of unattended children may sometimes cause concern.
While library staff may be able to take action if problems are brought to their notice, they have a range of services to provide to clients while working in public areas, and this cannot include the care and supervision of any child left unattended.
If a child is unattended or lost, library staff will attempt to contact the parent or carer, if they judge it necessary for the child’s welfare.
If a child is left unattended at closing time, staff will attempt to locate the parent or carer before notifying police. A staff member will remain with the child until collected.
