The State Reference Library Newspaper Collection includes local, Australian and overseas titles, including publications in languages other than English.
The State Reference Library holds Tasmanian newspapers from the early 1800s, up to the present day.
The Newspaper Collection includes major Australian daily newspapers and specialist Australian titles as well as overseas and non-English titles. All holdings are listed on TALIS.
Tasmanian and mainland capital city daily newspapers for the current month and previous month are held in the Foyer of the State Library building at 91 Murray Street, Hobart. Back issues and all other newspapers are held in the State Reference Library on the Second Floor.
Copies can be made from microfilm and a photographic reproduction service is available. Scanned images can also be requested. See fees and charges.
A serial is a publication which is produced at regular or irregular intervals but is not a “one-off” like a book. They can also be called a magazine, periodical or journal.
The State Reference Library holds over 7000 serial and newspaper titles covering a wide range of Australian and overseas publications including topics of cultural, practical, political, recreational and academic interest. A significant part of this collection comprises newsletters and publications from Tasmanian community groups.
Our serials are listed on TALIS and can be located with either a title or subject search.
Current issues of the more popular titles are on display in the Reading Room. Previous issues and all other titles are available on request at the Reference Desk.
