The Tasmanian Index provides references to selected articles of Tasmanian interest in Tasmanian newspapers and serials. The index began in 1966 but includes references to some earlier articles. From 1966 to June 1994 the indexing was done on cards. The cards have now been digitised and can be viewed online.
The Tasmanian Index is wide-ranging but does not include advertisements, public notices such as births, deaths and marriages, daily weather reports, routine sporting news, classified advertising and similar.
From mid-1994 the Tasmanian Index has been created online and is available through Classic TALIS. Some references from the card index have been transferred to the online index. Indexing of the Mercury, the Sunday Tasmanian and Tasmanian country ceased in September 2006, because these newspapers can be searched and read online at Newsbank and at Australia and New Zealand Reference Centre.
