Alice at the Allport Artists
Alice at the Allport explores the collections of the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts at the State Library of Tasmania, and especially the 'rooms' in which the Allport furniture collection is displayed. The curator, Penny Smith, has allocated a room to each of seven Australian ceramic artists and invited them to create a work inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The results are scenarios which challenge viewers' curiosity.
The adjacent Gallery a Mad Hatter's Tea Party has been created with tableware, chairs and napery designed and decorated by Tasmanian artists. It is not only an exhibition but also the venue for two afternoon teas during the Ten Days on the Island festival.
This has been an exhilirating opportunity to work with the State Library in creating an exciting event for the Ten Days on the Island International Arts Festival and to encourage greater public appreciation of the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts.
