Artist Statement: Fashioned from a 19th century phonograph, Old Tunes in new Time/Space conflates the world of manners and correctness, so characteristic of the Victorian era, with the ‘new spaces’ created by Lewis Carroll’s magical Wonderland. The phonograph’s distorted mouth-like horn and surrealistically disembodied arm with a nail-like stylus plays loony tunes in Alice’s music room.
Also from the 19th century, Zoetrope is an interactive music and animation machine. By spinning the barrel from left to right, the spectator triggers a tune while being drawn into Alice’s whirling journey. Peering through the zoetrope’s tiny windows, the viewer catches a glimpse of one of Alice’s fantastic adventures. |
