Polus Antarcticus [detail]Amsterdam: De Wit, c.1680 Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts This map was first issued in 1637 and is considered one of the earliest realistic maps of the Antarctic continent. There were four states of the Polus Antarcticus map, with many issues by other map-makers within each state. It is only the fourth state, first published in 1657, which shows Tasman’s discoveries in 1642 and 1644. |
