Tasmaniana Library Annotated copy of a real estate subdivision plan, showing sites auctioned by Alfred Harrap & Son on 10 October, 1904. Thomas Gunn (1844-1910) was a founder, with his brother John (1840-1897), of J. & T. Gunn Ltd. Commencing as builders and timber merchants in 1872, the brothers quickly expanded into general ironmongery and building supplies. The brothers were both directors of the National Bank; Thomas Gunn was also a member of the Launceston Marine Board. Alfred Harrap & Son began in 1857 as grain merchants, quickly diversifying into wool, farm machinery and supplies, and auctioneering. By the 1890s they were operating a river steamer service along the Tamar, transporting mining equipment and agricultural produce as well as passengers. The founding Alfred Harrap (1820-1893) was a magistrate, served several terms as Mayor of Launceston, and, with Thomas Gunn, was a member of the Marine Board. |
