Census and musters

While most Tasmanian census returns have not survived, some are available for the years 1837, 1838, 1842, 1843, 1848, 1851, and 1857. These have been indexed and are available in the Index to census records 1837 - 1857 database. Many of these years do not have complete returns and the information collected does vary.

The main set of returns includes the name of the householder, name of employer of servants, name of person in charge, place of residence, the name of the head of the house or establishment, its proprietor, whether the house was built of stone, brick, or of wood, whether it was complete or unfinished, whether it was inhabited or not, when the proprietor was present, number of persons generally residing there, and the number of these persons who were free. The return also contains a statistical form showing the age (within ranges), sex, religion, occupation, civil condition and trade or calling of the persons residing in the house.
