Cemetery records

Cemetery records can be useful for finding the location of a burial, or for finding the date of death. Key resources for this topic include the Tombstone and memorial inscriptions of Tasmania (TAMIOT) database for the main northern and southern Tasmanian cemeteries, and church burial registers.

TAMIOT consists of indexes and a single alphabetical list of burials in many cemeteries across Tasmania. A list of all cemeteries covered, arranged by municipality, can be found on the first microfiche, or on the Tasmanian Family History Society Inc website. Carr Villa (Launceston), Cornelian Bay (Hobart), and Kingston Lawn Cemetery are not included in the index.

The Tasmanian Family History Society uploaded the records in TAMIOT to the eHeritage website. Some of the Family History Society branches added images of the headstones to the records. You can access the records and images online through eHeritage.

A project being undertaken by Gravesites of Tasmania to make a photographic record of headstones in Tasmanian municipalities, provides another useful resource for family historians. A list of the cemeteries documented to date and an alphabetical list of the headstone names, at each cemetery is available. Copies of the CDs are held by the State Library. The Gravesites of Tasmania website also includes many special elements such as transcriptions from Dr R C Drought's record of burials performed at Brighton Plains Cemetery 1834-1840.

Resources that complement cemetery records include the Tasmanian Pioneers Index. This database, available on CD-ROM, indexes civil registrations of births, deaths and marriages from 1838 to 1839. Some pre-1838 church records are also included. Newspapers can also be a useful source of death rates: there are indexes, with varying coverage, for the Mercury (Hobart), Examiner (Launceston), and Advocate (Burnie).
