Wills and letters of administration

Records relating to probate can be very informative when tracing family history as they contain the date of a person's death and may identify relatives. Wills and probates are public documents and most are available for viewing. The Archives Office of Tasmania holds a range of records relating to the administration of probate. The three main series of records are:

  • Records relating to the granting of probate which includes a copy of the will
  • Records relating to the granting of Letters of Administration authorising the administration of interstate estates and recording the granting of probate
  • Records relating to Elections to Administer for small intestate estates

Records relating to probate, including wills, 'grants of probate', and Letters of Administration are held, up to the mid 1990s and these are indexed up to 1989 in Index to Wills & Letters of Administration from 1824 database.
