Letter from Sir John Franklin to Mr Jeffrey
This letter was written in 1845 by Sir John Franklin onboard HMS Erebus, in the early stages of what would be his final voyage. The letter was sent to Samuel Jeffrey, who worked at the Rossbank Observatory, located on the grounds of what is now Government House. Franklin discusses the preparations for the expedition as well as the current state of Van Diemen’s Land, which he describes as ‘a perfect pandemonium’
