If the State Library does not hold a copy of a particular book, report, article or other publication which you are after, we may be able to obtain a copy for you from an interstate or overseas library. This is known as an inter-library loan. The State Library has a number of databases and indexes which can be searched to help you locate particular articles and details.
Libraries Australia provides access to the national database of material held in Australian libraries. You can search for any item and locate which library in Australia holds it. The item can then be requested from your local library. In most cases books must be used within your local library.
A book/copy request form must be completed with all the details and signed. It can be collected from your local library or printed off this site.
You do not need to be a registered borrower to request an inter-library loan.
There are charges associated with the service. These can be viewed on the fees and charges page.
Items will generally arrive a couple of weeks after the request has been made. If an item is needed urgently, we can organise a rush service for an extra charge. These charges can be viewed on the fees and charges page.
If your request is for a photocopied article you will need to sign a book/copy request form. Photocopies may be kept, but in most cases books must not be taken out of the library. Items can be sent to your local library to be viewed.
