The State Library collections provide access to information, including educational and recreational materials, to the people of Tasmania. There are seven city public libraries and thirty nine smaller, rural public libraries established across the state serving a population of 480,000.
All of our collections can be accessed and searched through our integrated online statewide catalogue, TALIS.
Anyone, of any age, may join the State Library, and is then eligible to use any of these branches to borrow, return or place holds on library materials or to use other library services. There is no charge to Tasmanians who wish to become a member of the State Library.
The State Library of Tasmania includes resources for children and adults and is staffed by willing librarians and library technicians who will be delighted to help you find the items you seek.
The State Library of Tasmania provides access to a rich and diverse range of items for loan including books, videos, DVDs, CDs, CD-ROMs and magazines. We have new releases, best sellers, biographies, sumptuous coffee table books, DIY manuals, travel guides plus the latest on current affairs, science, international relations and social and cultural issues.
The major reference collection is housed in the State Reference Library, in Hobart. All branches of the State Library hold a selection of ready reference materials with the more extensive collections being in the larger city libraries.
