Learn to use classic TALIS with our online tutorial.
If you are having trouble accessing TALIS from home there are a number of different problems that could be occurring. Below is a list of possible problems and corresponding solutions.
If you have encountered an error when accessing TALIS, your browser may have cached (stored) the error in it's memory. If this occurs, every following time you attempt to access TALIS it will bring back the error page instead of opening a fresh one for you. To fix this you will need to clear your cache.
The port that is required to access TALIS (port 8000) may be blocked.
Ports can be blocked through a number of means. Some firewalls automatically block ports and some Internet Service Providers automatically block ports. If you are unable to access TALIS from a workplace it is likely that the IT staff have blocked port 8000.
If you are running a third-party firewall such as ZoneAlarm then you will need to add port 8000 as an exception.
If you are using an ADSL modem/router then you will need to check your users guide on how to open a port on your router.
There are a few reasons why this might be happening
1. You may not have Java enabled/installed
- Follow the instructions here to check if your Java is working
2. Pop-up blocker software is interfering;
- Pop-up blocker software can be included with some anti-virus programs. For example, Norton Antivirus includes software which will stop the web browser from popping up new windows. Check the options of your virus checker or other pop-up blocking software. Most software will allow you to enter a list of sites that allow pop-ups to display, to do this enter the url: www.talis.tas.gov.au* (note the * is important). Some web browsers will also automatically block pop-up windows.
3. It is minimising/appearing behind the main screen
- Sometimes the patron record screen will appear and then very quickly minimise itself or move to the back of all the windows you have open on the screen. If your patron record appears to flash on and then off the screen check the task bar at the bottom of the screen and see if it is there.
If this happens, usually the hold has been placed but the system is unable to display the confirmation message correctly. You can check that your hold has been placed by checking your patron record by clicking on the TALIS sidebar.
This error occurs for a number of reasons:
If you encounter this message always click on Finish Session, clear your cache, and try your search again.
If none of the above solutions have worked, please contact your local library or email us at state.library@education.tas.gov.au
