Tasmanian Resources & Information

The State Library holds a vast range of material on Tasmania, in library collections and online.  

  • Launceston Local Studies
  • Specialises in historical material - printed, manuscript and photographic - relating to Launceston and northern Tasmania.

  • Family history
  • The State Library of Tasmania holds an extensive range of Tasmanian records as well as a selection from interstate and overseas. These resources come in a variety of formats -including print, microform, CD-ROM and the Internet.

  • Our Streets, Our Stories
  • A bicentenary project, where people can add photographs and stories of Tasmania then and now

  • W.L. Crowther Library
  • Has rich collections of printed, manuscript, pictorial and photographic material. The emphasis is Tasmanian, but the collections range very widely in their subjects.

  • Community Organisations
  • Search for a community organisation in Tasmania

  • Tasmaniana Library
  • The Tasmaniana Library is the State Library’s “Stateiana” section. It collects and preserves Tasmanian published material

  • Heritage Services and Collections
  • The Heritage Collections provide reference and research services to clients in Tasmania, elsewhere in Australia and around the world.

  • Our Digital Island
  • Provides access to Tasmanian Web sites that have been preserved for posterity by the State Library of Tasmania

  • Indexes to Tasmanian Newspapers and Journals
  • The Tasmanian Index, which contains references to articles in Tasmanian newspapers and periodicals, began in 1966 as a card index which is still accessible in the Tasmaniana Library. The index on TALIS dates only from mid-1994, though earlier records are gradually being transferred from the cards to TALIS

  • Informing Tasmanians
  • Provides a framework for information provision, equitable access and use in Tasmania, and aims to increase people’s awareness of how to access and use information throughout their lives.

  • Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts
  • An outstanding collection of rare books, works of art, photographs, manuscripts, and English and European decorative arts

  • eHeritage
  • An online catalogue of selected holdings of 29 local history and genealogical organisations.

  • Sheet music
  • This site makes available online about two hundred items from the rich holdings of printed music in the State Library of Tasmania's Heritage Collections

  • STORS (Stable Tasmanian Open Repository Service)
  • STORS provides free long-term storage of, and access to, Tasmanian electronic documents, with a stable URL that you can link to immediately.

  • Tasmania Online
  • Your comprehensive guide to Tasmania on the web.

  • Tasmanian images
  • If you are searching for a photograph or painting to illustrate your research, the Images database will show you the range and diversity of the Heritage Collections
