The State Library operates under the provisions of the Libraries Act (1984). The committees, boards, and trusts constituted under this Act are:
Tasmanian Library Advisory Board,
State Library and Archives Trust,
Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts Management Committee.
Regulations relevant to the State Library were proclaimed in 1985 (Statutory Rules 1985, No. 249, Libraries Regulations 1985). Libraries Regulation 2002 details the regulations in relation to the Libraries Ast 1984.
The Libraries Act (1984) states that library services are to be free except in certain cases. Library services for which fees may be charged are those designated as practical library services or as value-added library services.
